Hillsdale County Sheriff's Office and Jail

The Hillsdale County Sheriff's Office operates in Hillsdale and runs the county jail. Deputies patrol the county and make arrests that result in bookings at the local facility. Other agencies, including local police departments and Michigan State Police, may also book individuals at the same jail. Every booking creates a formal record tied to that arrest.

Hillsdale County sits in Michigan's southern tier, sharing borders with Indiana to the south and coming close to Ohio to the southeast. Neighboring Michigan counties include Jackson to the north, Lenawee to the east, Branch to the west, Calhoun to the northwest, and Eaton to the north. The county seat and city of Hillsdale is where the jail and Sheriff's Office are based. The county website at hillsdalecounty.com has department listings and contact information.

If you need to reach the FOIA coordinator or ask about a specific booking, the Hillsdale County Sheriff's Office is the right contact. Their records unit handles requests for jail-related public records.

VINELink is the best starting point for searching current inmate custody status in Hillsdale County. The system connects directly to the jail's management software and shows live data. You can search by name, case number, or inmate ID at no cost. It is available every day, around the clock.

Go to vinelink.com and select Michigan, then pick Hillsdale County. Type in the person's name. If they are in custody at the Hillsdale County Jail, their record will come up with booking information and current status. If they have been released, they will not appear in the current roster.

State Prisoners: Search OTIS

The Michigan Department of Corrections runs OTIS, the Offender Tracking Information System, for state-sentenced inmates. If someone from Hillsdale County was convicted and sent to a state prison rather than held at the county jail, OTIS is where you find them. The two systems are separate. OTIS does not include people held at the Hillsdale County Jail, and VINELink does not include state prison inmates.

OTIS is free to search at mdocweb.state.mi.us/OTIS2/otis2.aspx. Enter a last name (wildcards work with three or more leading characters) or an MDOC number. The results show the person's current location, offense details, sentence start and end dates, and current supervision status. The MDOC home page at michigan.gov/corrections explains the department's systems and services in more detail.

OTIS keeps records for three years after discharge. Status codes include PRISON, PAROLE, PROB (probation), ESCAPE levels, ABSCOND levels, and DISCHRG for completed sentences.

Filing a FOIA Request for Hillsdale County Booking Records

Michigan's Freedom of Information Act at MCL 15.231 gives the public the right to request records from government agencies. Booking records held by the Hillsdale County Sheriff's Office are generally public. You do not need to be a party to the case to request them.

Put your request in writing. Describe the record clearly enough for staff to locate it. Include the name of the person who was arrested, the date of arrest if you know it, and what type of record you need. You can send the request by email, mail, or fax. The Hillsdale County Sheriff's Office has five business days to respond. If the request is complex, they can extend the deadline by up to ten more business days, but they must notify you in writing if they do that.

Fees are allowed under MCL 15.234. The office can charge for time spent searching and reviewing records, copying costs, and postage. If the total estimated cost is over $50, a deposit may be required. Fee waivers are available for those who qualify through an Affidavit of Indigency. Some parts of a booking record may be withheld, including personal address information and details about victims or active investigations.

Michigan ICHAT: Conviction Records

ICHAT, operated by the Michigan State Police, is a separate tool from booking releases. It shows public conviction records from all 83 Michigan counties, including Hillsdale County. ICHAT covers felonies and misdemeanors punishable by more than 93 days. It does not include arrests that did not lead to conviction, federal charges, or juvenile records.

To search, you need a full name and date of birth. There is a small fee per search paid by credit card. Visit ICHAT at michigan.gov/msp/services/ichat. Use ICHAT when you need to confirm a conviction, not just an arrest. The FOIA law discussion and the ICHAT system explain different parts of the record chain for anyone involved in the Hillsdale County justice system.

Booking Records: What They Include

A booking record created at the Hillsdale County Jail contains the person's full name, date of birth, the booking date and time, the charges they were arrested on, and the bail or bond amount. Physical description information including height, weight, and identifiable marks may also appear. An inmate ID number is assigned when they are processed into the jail.

A booking record documents an arrest. It is not evidence of guilt and does not reflect the outcome of any case. People are sometimes arrested and later have charges dropped or dismissed. The case outcome is documented in court records, not in the booking release itself. To get case outcome information, contact the Hillsdale County Circuit Court or the District Court serving that area.
