Branch County Sheriff's Office

The Branch County Sheriff's Office runs the county jail and handles all booking releases for the county. Branch County sits in south-central Michigan, near the Indiana and Ohio borders. The Sheriff's Office is the primary source for local booking records, custody status updates, and inmate information. They maintain the jail roster and process all booking paperwork for people held in the county facility.

When someone is booked at the Branch County Jail, the Sheriff's Office creates a booking record. This record includes the person's name, date of birth, booking date, charges, and custody status. These records are public under Michigan law, though some details may be withheld if they could interfere with an active investigation. The Sheriff's Office updates the jail roster regularly.

For direct contact, reach the Branch County Sheriff's Office through the county government website. You can ask about current inmates, bond information, or submit a formal records request. Walk-in visits during business hours are also an option for getting booking records in person.

Find Branch County Booking Records

There are a few ways to look up booking releases in Branch County. VINELink is the best starting point for most searches. It covers most Michigan county jails and gives real-time custody status. You can search by name and get notified when an inmate's status changes.

To search for someone held at the Branch County Jail, go to VINELink and select Michigan. Enter the person's first and last name. The system will show current custody status, booking information, and any scheduled release dates. VINELink is free to use and available around the clock. You can also register for automatic alerts by phone, email, or text if you want updates when custody status changes.

If you already know the person is serving a state prison sentence rather than a county jail sentence, use the Michigan Department of Corrections OTIS system instead. OTIS and VINELink serve different populations, so knowing which facility holds the person helps you pick the right tool.

Note: VINELink searches county jail populations, while OTIS covers state prison and parole records. Use both if you are unsure which system applies.

State Inmate Records via OTIS

The Michigan Department of Corrections runs the Offender Tracking Information System, known as OTIS. This is the official statewide database for people in state prison or on parole. If someone from Branch County was sentenced to a state facility, you will find their record here rather than in the county jail system.

OTIS is free to search at mdocweb.state.mi.us. You can search by last name or by MDOC number. The system shows current location, offense, sentence length, earliest release date, and parole status. Results cover people currently in prison, on parole, on probation supervised by MDOC, and those discharged within the last three years. The Michigan Department of Corrections website has more background on what OTIS tracks.

OTIS does not include people held in the Branch County Jail. County jail inmates are separate from MDOC prisoners. The county runs its own booking system, and only the Sheriff's Office or VINELink can show county-level custody status.

VINELink Notification Service

VINELink is a free victim notification and inmate search tool that covers most Michigan county jails, including Branch County. It lets you check custody status at any time without calling the jail. The service runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Beyond simple searches, VINELink lets you register for automatic notifications. When an inmate's custody status changes, such as a release, transfer, or court date, the system contacts you by phone call, email, or text message. Attorneys and concerned family members can use this feature, not just crime victims. You can track multiple cases at the same time through one account.

VINELink also offers TTY access for people who are hearing impaired. The service is available in English and Spanish. To start, visit vinelink.com and choose Michigan from the state list.

Submit a FOIA Request in Branch County

Michigan's Freedom of Information Act, found at MCL 15.231, gives the public the right to request government records. This includes booking records, incident reports, and other documents held by the Branch County Sheriff's Office. You can submit a FOIA request by mail, email, or in person.

Your request must describe the record well enough for staff to find it. For booking records, include the person's name, the date of the incident or arrest, and the location if you know it. The Sheriff's Office has five business days to respond. They can grant the request, deny it, or ask for a ten-day extension if the search is complex.

Some records may be withheld under FOIA exemptions. Active investigations, privacy protections, and law enforcement concerns can limit what gets released. If part of a record is exempt, the office should give you the rest with the exempt sections removed. Fees may apply for labor and copying, though a fee waiver is available for those who qualify based on income.

Note: People currently held in a state or local correctional facility cannot submit FOIA requests under Michigan law.

What Branch County Booking Records Contain

A booking release from Branch County typically includes the person's full name, date of birth, and a booking number. It shows the date and time of booking, the charges or alleged offenses, and the current custody status. Bond or bail amounts may also appear, along with the housing location inside the jail.

Booking records are not the same as conviction records. A booking shows that someone was taken into custody and processed, not that they were found guilty. Charges can be dropped, reduced, or result in acquittal. It is important to read booking records with this in mind.

Some booking records also include physical description data like height, weight, and gender. Prior booking history at the same facility may appear depending on what the Sheriff's Office makes public. The level of detail can vary based on what the county releases through its online system or public records process.

Criminal history records maintained by the Michigan State Police are available separately through ICHAT. ICHAT covers felony convictions and serious misdemeanors from all 83 Michigan counties but does not include county jail booking records.

Branch County Jail Roster and Public Access

The Branch County jail roster lists people currently in custody at the county facility. Rosters are public records in Michigan, and most Sheriff's Offices update them daily or more often. The roster typically shows name, booking date, charges, and bond status.

If the county does not publish a live online roster, VINELink is the most reliable way to check current custody status. You can also call the Branch County Sheriff's Office during business hours to ask about a specific person. Staff can confirm whether someone is in custody and provide basic booking information over the phone.

MCL 28.243 governs the reporting of criminal history information in Michigan. Under this law, law enforcement agencies must submit fingerprints and criminal history data to the Michigan State Police. This reporting creates the statewide records that feed into ICHAT and related databases. While this statute does not directly control jail rosters, it shapes how criminal records flow through the state system.
