Lake County Overview
Lake County Sheriff's Office and Jail Bookings
The Lake County Sheriff's Office in Baldwin is the primary law enforcement authority for the county and operates the county jail. When someone is arrested in Lake County, they are transported to the county jail for booking. That process creates a record that covers the charges, booking date, and bond information. These records are public under Michigan's Freedom of Information Act.
Lake County does not have a large population, and the county jail operates at a scale consistent with a rural Michigan county. For current custody status, VINELink is the fastest and most accessible free option. The Lake County Jail participates in VINELink. You can search by name or ID and register to receive automatic notifications by phone, email, or text if a custody status changes. The service is available at any hour at no cost.
For questions about specific bookings or bond amounts, contacting the Sheriff's Office directly by phone is also an option. For any formal document requests, the FOIA process is the appropriate path.
What Lake County Booking Releases Contain
A booking release documents what happened when a person was taken into custody and processed at the county jail. It is a record of arrest, not a record of conviction. Nothing in a booking record indicates guilt or the final outcome of a case. Charges can change, be dropped entirely, or be resolved in various ways after the arrest date.
Typical Lake County booking records include the individual's full name and date of birth, the date and time of booking, the arresting agency, charges listed by offense name and statute number, and bond amount if bail was set. Some records include a scheduled court date or jail housing location. The record captures only what was known at the time of arrest.
For case outcomes, the Lake County Circuit Court handles case records showing how charges were ultimately resolved. That could mean a conviction, dismissal, plea agreement, or acquittal. If you need both the arrest record and the final case disposition, you may need to contact the Sheriff's Office and the circuit court clerk in Baldwin separately.
Michigan OTIS for State Offenders from Lake County
When a person convicted of a felony in Lake County receives a state prison sentence, they enter the Michigan Department of Corrections system and are no longer tracked through the county jail. The MDOC maintains OTIS, the Offender Tracking Information System, which is a free public database that lets anyone search for current state prisoners, parolees, and MDOC-supervised probationers.
OTIS searches require at least the person's last name or their MDOC number. The search is not case-sensitive. You can use a wildcard asterisk after three or more letters to broaden a name search. Results include the person's name, date of birth, current facility or supervision location, status code, controlling statute, and expected release date where applicable. OTIS status codes like PRISON, PAROLE, PROB, DISCHRG, ABSCOND, and ESCAPE each have a specific meaning that is explained at michigan.gov/corrections.
OTIS does not include county jail inmates, federal prisoners, juvenile records, or offenders who completed MDOC supervision more than three years ago. For those records, contact the Lake County Sheriff's Office directly or use ICHAT for conviction history.
Filing a FOIA Request with the Lake County Sheriff's Office
Michigan's Freedom of Information Act at MCL 15.231 gives the public the right to request records from government agencies including the Lake County Sheriff's Office. This covers booking records, incident reports, and related law enforcement documents. The request must be in writing. Written requests can be submitted by email, fax, mail, or delivered in person.
Include enough detail for staff to find the record. For booking records, give the full name of the person involved, the approximate date of the arrest or booking, and the location where the incident occurred. A request that is too vague can be denied because the agency cannot identify what specific record you are asking for. You do not need to state why you want the record, and you do not need to reference the law by name.
The Lake County Sheriff's Office has five business days to respond after receiving your written request. If the request involves a large volume of records or requires an extensive search, they can extend that by up to ten additional business days, but they must notify you in writing with an explanation. The response will either grant or deny the request, or partially grant it. Fees may apply for copying, staff time, and postage. If the total estimated cost exceeds $50, the agency may request a deposit before starting work. People who receive public assistance or can show financial hardship may qualify for a fee waiver by filing an Affidavit of Indigency. Up to $20 of the total processing fee is waived for those who qualify, and the waiver can be used up to twice per year.
Note: Under MCL 15.231(2), individuals who are incarcerated in a state or local correctional facility are not eligible to file FOIA requests.
