Kalkaska County Sheriff's Office Booking Records

The Kalkaska County Sheriff's Office is responsible for all county jail operations and manages booking records for individuals arrested within the county. It is the single facility serving the entire county, with no separate municipal jail in any of the communities. Every arrest in Kalkaska County results in a booking at this facility.

When someone is booked, staff record the arrest details, create a custody record, and set or document bond information. That record is subject to public access. For the most current custody information, VINELink is the quickest free option. The Kalkaska County Jail participates in VINELink, so you can search by name or ID number and get current status. You can also register to receive automatic notifications by phone, email, or text any time that person's custody status changes. VINELink runs 24 hours a day at no cost.

For anything beyond current custody status, the Sheriff's Office handles records requests directly. Staff can look up booking information over the phone for basic inquiries, and formal requests for documents go through the FOIA process described below.

Understanding Kalkaska County Booking Releases

A booking release is the record generated when someone is brought into jail custody and processed. It documents the arrest but says nothing about guilt or conviction. The charges listed at booking reflect what law enforcement believed at the time of arrest. Those charges can change, be dropped, or be resolved differently as the case goes through the court system.

Booking records in Kalkaska County typically include the individual's full name and date of birth, the booking date and time, the name of the arresting agency, charges listed by offense name and statute, and bond amount if bail was set. Some records also include a housing location within the facility or a scheduled court date. These records document what happened at intake, not how the case ended.

To find out how a case was resolved, the Kalkaska County Circuit Court handles case records showing plea agreements, verdicts, and sentencing outcomes. If you need the full picture, both offices may be relevant. The Sheriff's Office has the booking record; the court clerk has the disposition and case history.

OTIS for State Offenders from Kalkaska County

When someone convicted of a felony in Kalkaska County receives a state prison sentence, they leave the county jail and enter the Michigan Department of Corrections system. The MDOC tracks these individuals in OTIS, the Offender Tracking Information System. OTIS is free and does not require an account or registration.

Search OTIS using the person's last name or their MDOC number. The search is not case-sensitive. You can use a wildcard asterisk after three or more letters to pull broader name results. OTIS shows current custody status, facility or supervision location, the controlling statute for the sentence, and the earliest release date where available. Status codes like PRISON, PAROLE, PROB, DISCHRG, and ABSCOND each describe where the person is in the supervision process. More detail on what each code means is on the MDOC website.

OTIS does not cover county jail inmates, federal prisoners, juvenile records, or individuals discharged from MDOC supervision more than three years ago. For those records, the Sheriff's Office and the ICHAT conviction database are the right places to look.

FOIA Requests with the Kalkaska County Sheriff's Office

Michigan law at MCL 15.231 guarantees the public's right to access government records including booking releases, incident reports, and other law enforcement documents held by the Sheriff's Office. To request these records formally, you must submit a written request. Email, fax, mail, and in-person delivery all count as written submissions under the law.

Be specific in your request. Mention the full name of the person involved, the date or general timeframe of the arrest or booking, and where it occurred. If your request is too vague, the agency can deny it because they cannot locate the specific record. You do not need to explain why you want the record, and you do not need to cite the law in your request.

The agency has five business days to respond after receiving your request. If the search is complex or requires reviewing many records, they can extend the deadline by up to ten more business days, but they must send you a written notice explaining the delay. Fees may apply for copying, labor, and postage. If the total estimated cost exceeds $50, the agency may ask for a deposit before starting the search. If you cannot afford the fees, file an Affidavit of Indigency with your request. Qualifying individuals receive a waiver of up to $20 of the processing fee, with a limit of two waivers per calendar year.

Note: People who are currently incarcerated in state or local correctional facilities cannot submit FOIA requests under MCL 15.231(2).

Criminal Conviction History via ICHAT

For conviction history beyond current bookings, the Michigan State Police's ICHAT database covers all 83 Michigan counties including Kalkaska. ICHAT records felony convictions and serious misdemeanors. You need a full name and date of birth to search. A small fee applies per search, paid online by credit card.

ICHAT is a conviction database. It does not show arrests that did not lead to conviction, open charges, county jail bookings, juvenile records, federal cases, or out-of-state records. It is the right tool when you want to verify whether someone has a Michigan conviction on record. If you want current custody status or recent arrest information, VINELink and the Sheriff's Office are the better options.
